The Museum of the City of New York's (MCNY) is hosting an exhibition titled City As Canvas: The first time exhibition of works from the expansive street art collection of Martin Wong. The show features sketch books, photographs and tons of mixed media art on ply wood, canvas, card board and paper from some of the most legendary NYC artists from the 70's through the 90's.
These artists include writers such as Zephyr, Dondi, Futura 2000 and Keith Hering all of which were huge cyclists, some were even local racers.
These guys had a huge impact on the NYC street culture and they pioneered the trend of legitimizing graffiti art from subway trains and buildings, to prominent galleries and art collections.
The exhibit is on display until August 24th at the Museum of the City of New York. For more info check out the MCNY website. Also go to Cyclists International for a great write up by cycling advocate Jennifer Benepe who recalls a story about riding with Dondi back in the day.
